It’s Halloween season and therefore, scary movie time. This year we watched a couple from this list, and also Scream and Little Shop of Horrors. Both are solid movies, and if this was my top 20, would’ve definitely made the cut, but these are my all time favorites:

1. The Shining (1980)– remember when Joey on Friends had to hide his copy of The Shining in the freezer because it’s too scary? I totally relate. The book is terrifying. The movie isn’t quite as scary but still excellent.

2. What We Do in the Shadows (2015) – HILARIOUS and not scary at all.

3. Halloween (1978) – Classic. I love how you feel like this could be happening in your own neighborhood, which makes it super creepy. You’ll be looking over your shoulder for a while.

4. The Exorcist (1973) – I think this one is scarier to me now than it was when I was younger. Actually, I like any of those old school horror movies with some kind of religious element, like The Seventh Sign or The Omen, but this one’s the best.

5. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) – I remember watching this as a kid and thinking it was terrifying, so when my middle baby (he’s 10) asked to watch it, I was like ok, but it might be a little scary. It was so good! Still a little smidge scary at the end (the headless horseman throws a flaming jack o’lantern at the camera) but that’s it. Spoiler alert from 1949!

6. Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) – There’s a reason theatres still show this every Saturday (or did pre Covid)

7. Psycho (1960) – Another one of those creepier-as-an-adult movies

8. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) – my kids and husband do not like this show! I watched it again by myself this year. Oh well.

9. Rosemary’s Baby (1968) – Terrifying. That’s all I have to say.

10. The Amityville Horror (1979) – Super creepy because it’s based on a true story-ish.

What would be in your top 10? Any you think I should add to this list?
